More on an advisor
Nov. 7, 2003
I went to talk with an potential advisor today. By way of doubly-indirect referencing, I found a professor in our ECE department who is interested in game theoretic techniques for flow control on networks, among other things. He's also written several books on dynamic noncooperative games. Our meeting seemed to go well. He invited me to attend his group meetings and he suggested I attend an economics conference held at UIUC this weekend, which I will do. Hopefully, if things go well, I'll have an advisor in time to take the qual next semester. I really thought the process would be a lot harder than this.
On a related note, I asked the advice of my undergraduate advisor, Meera Sitharam, about my whole advisement situation. She made some very insightful comments, and I realized that I forgot how much of an influence she had on my decision to go to graduate school in the first place. If there are any computer science students from UF reading this now who are interested in complexity theory, stop by her office sometime for a chat. You'll be surprised how much you learn.
