Pippin's loft and bell

Aug. 17, 2002

We've discovered that Pippin is very playful. He has two new toys. My dad made him a shelf for his cage from a cutting board and we hung it on the wires with screwhooks, and he loves it. He's learned that we put treats up there so he has to stretch to reach them, and he would climb up there to pull his hay down until we raised it higher to make more space beneath. Now whenever he wants a treat, he puts his front feet up on the loft and looks around for one first thing. Then he looks on top of his little flowerpot, then he checks his bowl. Finally he looks at us and starts squeaking.

Since that toy was so successful, we decided to hang a little bell in his cage (probably left over from our wedding favors, though I'm not sure). It dangles from the ceiling by thread. He immediately went up and tried to bite it, evoking a strangled little metal sound, so I rang it when I put a carrot in his cage. About a half hour later, he went over to it, grabbed it with his teeth, backed up a step, threw his head backward and let go, and it rang beautifully. He proceeded to do this about 15 times in a row, and I think Matt is now glad that starting tomorrow night, Pippin's cage will no longer be in our bedroom. Watching him ring it is the cutest thing. I can't wait to think up another toy for him.
