Power was meant to be abused

Nov. 18, 2003

One advantage of being a computer science grauduate student is the exclusive free reign of DCL after closing. This came in handy last week when working on my operating systems project. The program could only run on the Sun machines in the lab, and it was much mroe convenient to be sitting next to one, rather than SSH from home. Thus, after midnight, when the lab monkey comes around and makes all the undergrads leave, I can continue on my project until the wee hours of the morning.

Of course, the power isn't only used for its intended purpose. Tonight, we're using the projector in the large lecture hall for a screening of The Two Towers: Extended Edition. I'm anxious to see if they managed to fix the characterization problems from the last film.

This weekend we've got a LAN party planned in one of the TA offices, which has a large number of unused, 23" monitors. Not only are we spared the burden of hauling our own monitors in from home (usually the most odious task for a LAN) but also we're treated to much larger monitors at much higher resolutions than we're used to.
