Visitors and Lowenherz

Aug. 13, 2001

Three friends of mine from Gainesville (Frohike, Langley, and Byers) came up to visit to this past friday. All three guys lived on my floor in North. One thing that makes us such good friends is that we all like to play games. Mostly video games, but we are also avid card and board game players. With this in mind, we commemorated their visit by purchasing a new German board game, Lowenherz. Germany seems to be the primary source for unique board games, and this one is like none I've ever played.

The game plays on a rectangular board marked off in squares. Each square has one of four types of terrain: blank, wooded, town, or mine. Each player tries to mark off territory on the board by placing walls on the lines between the squares, a la lines and boxes. There are also a variety of rules governing the expansion of your marked off territory. Quite a unique and interesting game.

Finally, I want to wish my sister Melody a happy birthday. She turned 17 on Aug. 10!
